Researcher - Machine vision applications in molecular biological methods and remote sensing - Finlands miljöcentral Syke

Are you interested in applying machine vision in environmental research? Have you graduated with a master’s degree in a suitable field and are you interested in a researcher’s career path?

We are seeking a researcher in machine vision and machine learning methods to join our group to respond to the changing needs of environmental research. The tasks of the researcher to be recruited include the application of these methods to environmental data, especially in applications related to molecular biological methods and remote sensing. These applications typically utilize statistical learning and deep learning methods applied to supervised learning problems, such as classification, recognition, and regression. Often, the applied methods need to be further processed and developed. Additionally, they need to be utilized in environmental monitoring and research. The task may also include software and hardware development. The researcher acts as an expert in methods in interdisciplinary national and international research projects. The role requires interest and readiness to learn broadly from the methods of other environmental sciences, as well as demonstrated ability to clearly communicate the methods used to representatives of other sciences. The role and our cooperation network offer the opportunity to develop into an international expert on the theme. It is also possible to combine e.g. doctoral studies with the role. The more detailed job description is defined taking into account the selected researcher’s skills and interests.

The researcher to be recruited will work in several of Syke’s research projects, such as the FinBIF-FIRI2021 (https://www.syke.fi/fi-FI/Tutkimus__kehittaminen/Tutkimus_ja_kehittamishankkeet/Hankkeet/Suomen_lajitietokeskus__FinBIF_tutkimusinfrastruktuurin_kehittamishanke_FinBIFFIRI2021) and DNAquaIMG (https://dnaquaimg.eu/) projects funded by the Research Council of Finland, the EU-funded Priodiversity LIFE (https://www.sttinfo.fi/tiedote/70042396/suomen-kaikkien-aikojen-suurin-eu-rahoitteinen-life-luontohanke-kaynnistyy-suomen-ymparistokeskus-mukana-kehittamassa-uusia-ja-vaikuttavampia-tapoja-luontokadon-torjuntaan?publisherId=69819243&lang=fi) project, and the Suokauko project funded by the Ministry of the Environment. In these national and international projects, you will act as part of Syke’s team of experts. In addition to participating in ongoing projects, you will also support the growth of the project family by participating in writing new funding applications.

The field of environmental science is experiencing a rapid influx of diverse data, driving the adoption of advanced machine vision and machine learning techniques in research and information production. At Syke, we are committed to enhancing our research and development capabilities in these areas to meet evolving environmental research needs.

The task will be positioned to ‘Quality of Information’ unit’s ‘method development’ group. Syke has offices at Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä and Oulu - you can express your wish concerning the office location. We work in an open space office and activity-based environment, but flexible remote working is our working standard today.

Our expectations of the applicant

A successful applicant has a higher university degree in a suitable field (e.g., computer science, applied statistics, data science or engineering). In addition, the task requires interest and a knowledge base and practical experience of machine learning and especially machine vision methods demonstrated by education, work experience, or otherwise. You need good programming skills in the task, especially with the Python language, and a good understanding of suitable programming libraries (e.g., tensorflow and pytorch), as well as experience with various distributed high-performance computing services (HPC services, e.g., CSC or AWS).

As personal characteristics, the task requires readiness and motivation to take over new methods from other environmental sciences. We appreciate initiative, activity, good interaction skills, and motivation to participate in common activities.

The task requires readiness to travel to other Syke offices, project meetings, and for example to scientific conferences abroad.

Experience in remote sensing, molecular biological monitoring methods, bioinformatics, and research related to environmental monitoring is considered an advantage.

You need excellent English skills for the task.

Benefits Syke has a culture that supports learning and offers the opportunity for versatile competence development. We have flexible working hours and flexible remote working practices. We offer sports and culture benefits, a subsidised lunch in contract canteens and comprehensive occupational health care. Clarifications

The person selected for the position might need to undergo concise security clearance vetting with the applicant’s consent (Security Clearance Act 726/2014). More detailed information on the procedure and the subject's rights is available at www.supo.fi.
