Senior Statistician Anu Uuttu has enjoyed many roles in Statistics Finland. “I’ve been allowed to try many things here. I’ve been encouraged to develop and try out different roles,” Anu says.

Anu Uuttu has recently started in a new role as the product owner of a personal data system. At the moment, her job description includes the change management and development of data reserves. The continuous service development of the personal data reserve is promoted through sprint-type work in close cooperation with other experts. The work includes a great deal of organising and prioritising, as well as communication with the users. This is a new role at Statistics Finland, which means that it will still change and be specified along the way.

“In all my roles at Statistics Finland, I have always had a working partner and a team to work with,” Anu says.

Anu started her career in Statistics Finland in 2007, in international operations. Her duties included preparations for EU and OECD cases, as well as coordination of development projects funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. She found her next challenge in a role that combined international affairs with the production of statistics. In the Prices and Salaries unit, Finland was in charge of international price comparison work in the North Europe group.

“At that point, my interest in producing statistics became even more clear,” says Anu.

Anu finally transferred fully to statistics work when she started her new job as the production manager of the index of wage and salary earnings in Salary Statistics. This role provided her with strong competence throughout the entire statistics production process, from data collection to publishing and archiving information. She also became familiar with various projects and development work. In 2021–2023, she worked as a product coordinator in an extensive project unit related to the Statistics Finland’s social and healthcare reform.

“Statistics Finland has allowed me to grow into an expert at my own pace, in cooperation with good colleagues and teams,” says Anu.

As a large organisation, Statistics Finland is able to offer a wide range of roles. Subject competence is needed for different statistics and phenomena, as well as duties of different types, such as statistics production, development assignments and international roles.

“I have also wanted to seize these opportunities and make the most of the organisation’s possibilities in internal staff rotation.”

Gradually, Anu has reinforced her view on what kinds of roles suit her the best.

“We are all different, and we all have different strengths. It is good to find work teams where we can complement each other and find the best ways of moving matters forward.”
