We are looking for a senior scientist/scientist to reduce food waste and promote the sustainability of the food system. The Senior scientist will work in the Sustainable Food Systems and Society (SUST) research group at the Natural Resources Institute Finland, mainly on measuring and reducing food waste, and more broadly on enhancing and improving life-cycle wide sustainability in the food system. The work include management of the research, design, research and implementation of effective food waste reduction measures and interventions, as well as the evaluation of the effectiveness of waste reduction interventions, in particular for households. The work will also include assessing the quantity and quality of food waste, assessing the environmental impacts of production and consumption in the food system from life-cycle perspective and enhancing and promotion of research-based food system sustainability transformation actions, in collaboration with other researchers in the group and food system players and other stakeholders. An important part of the work is be the publish of high quality research journal papers and science communication, the design and management of new large international research projects and the preparation of related research plans and funding proposals in a key responsibility role.

To be successful in this position, you must have a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. food science, agricultural science, social science, behavioural science, environmental science and/or engineering). In addition, the successful performance of the post requires an innovative and multidisciplinary approach and the ability to apply theory to practice. In particular, experience in food waste and food waste related research, as well as an understanding of system thinking and system level modelling; service design; behavioural sciences (e.g. choice architecture, theories of motivation); intervention design and implementation; and knowledge of life-cycle based sustainability methods (e.g. LCA, SLCA) and related practical research experience and leadership of large holistic research projects.
In addition, the applicant must have
• a proven ability to publish in high quality peer-reviewed publications on topics relevant to the job description
• a passion for leading and contributing to research projects identified in the job description
• experience in the successful preparation of relevant research plans and funding proposals
• strong international research and other relevant networks
• excellent written and oral English language skills
• ability and willingness to work collaboratively in different project teams and roles
• ability and willingness to work independently and learn new skills
