    Scientist (Geospatial Data Analytics)

    The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for the Information Solutions Unit for a motivated Scientist (Geospatial Data Analytics) to work as a Generative AI Specialist to develop GenAI-based solutions that transform geological and geospatial datasets into actionable insights. The role focuses on creating methods for extracting, structuring and standardizing geological knowledge and co‑designing AI-powered tools that support environmental management and mineral exploration in both national and international projects. Your office is in Espoo, Kuopio, Rovaniemi or Kokkola and you can also work remotely partially in Finland.

    Your key responsibilities will be:
    • Generative AI/LLM application development
    • Develop NLP pipelines to extract structured geological information
    • Design methods for transforming qualitative geological knowledge into standardized features compatible with machine learning models.
    • Implement and evaluate transformer-based models for domain-specific geoscientific text processing.
    • Develop Generative AI solutions (e.g., LLM-based reasoning, RAG frameworks) to support interpretation and decision-making.
    • Contribute to project documentation, reports, and scientific communication and publications.
    • Collaborate with project partners and end-users, including industry stakeholders and domain experts
    • Participate in the tendering and funding application processes as a GenAI expert.

    You will be working in the Information Solutions Unit of approximately 56 professionals, who work with geological data collection, management, and distribution. You will be part of the Geoinformatics group that consists of 8 members specialized in machine learning and remote sensing methods.

    Education, experience and skills expected of the applicant
    • Master's degree in Computer/Data Science
    • Strong background in machine learning and natural language processing
    • Hands-on experience with transformer-based architectures and deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow). Strong Python programming
    • Design GenAI solutions and deploy them in production
    • Understand concepts such as fine-tuning and tradeoffs regarding GenAI
    • Measure solution outputs and detect hallucinations
    • Recognize model misuse risks
    • Willingness to travel - The task involves traveling both domestically and abroad for an estimated 10–20 days per year.
    • Fluent written and oral skills in English

    Education, experience and skills that are appreciated
    • Doctoral studies/PhD in Computer/Data Science
    • Familiar with GIS tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS
    • Experience in cloud and HPC environments (e.g., Azure and CSC)
    • Willingness to take part on international assignments
    • Finnish language skills or interest in studying Finnish
