Luke is looking for a Research Scientist, postdoc, natural resource economics, for a 3-year position. The task is related to economic research on the green transition, where knowledge of natural resource markets and policies supports sustainable business.
This postdoc position is part of the Postdoctoral Programme for Research Institutes in Finland. The programme is funded from the Finnish government's multi-annual research and development (R&D) funding plan. The programme recruits 85 new postdoctoral researchers to 12 Finnish government research institutes between 2025 and 2028. The aim of the Programme is to strengthen RDI competence in areas important to society and business. A postdoctoral researcher will conduct goal-oriented high-level research at the interface between the academic community, industry, and administration. The Programme supports postdoctoral researcher’s networking and mobility between sectors.
The selected person will also take part in Luke's Doctoral Programme, which coordinates, develops, and monitors the qualification of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at the Natural Resources Institute Finland.
The aim of the research is to explore the economics of sustainability transition. The focus is on the increasing demand of new products, policies supporting the transition, and how production systems of renewable resources (Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, i.e., AFF) will adapt to changing and uncertain demand and policies. Currently, we see a decline of biodiversity and a need for added ecosystem carbon sequestration but also increasing competition of biomass for food, materials, and energy. This creates a biomass gap, which the sustainability transition needs to solve.
The research should focus on production and demand systems through modelling the markets of food, materials, and/or energy. The central discipline and the focus of research is economics, while inter-disciplinary research collaboration is expected with other experts (within and outside Luke). The existing market level models of AFF, which already include basic commodities, could be developed to analyze economic gains and adjustments of production, input, and resource use. This research should allow extensions to the wider economy. Besides research, the work includes project management.
