We seek a postdoc with a PhD in forestry, statistics, or machine learning for the project “Digital Twin of Boreal Forest Structure with Remote Sensing and Forest Inventories”. We offer a possibility to do cutting-edge research in an international setting.

We seek to fill a postdoctoral position in project “Digital Twin of Boreal Forest Structure with Remote Sensing and Forest Inventories (DigiTForest)” funded by the Academy of Finland. The objective is to develop methods for mapping forest structure with special focus on biodiversity using remote sensing data, e.g., especially airborne laser scanning. The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Dr. Joel Kostensalo and collaborates closely with Luke’s remote sensing experts and project collaborators from Sweden, Norway, and Canada. The work includes the possibility for 2–4-week research visits to international collaborators.

Our expectations of the applicant

We expect a doctoral degree in an applicable field (e.g., forestry, statistics, machine learning, or similar), good skills in statistical analysis of empirical data, capability to handle large data sets, interest in understanding forest biodiversity, fluent written and oral English, and a willingness to work abroad. In addition, we appreciate previous experience in working with remote sensing data, large-scale scientific computing, and familiarity with the R programming environment. We also take into account the quantity and quality of previous scientific publications, particularly those in international series relating to forestry, statistics, remote sensing, or machine learning.

The person should primarily work in Joensuu. Other Luke locations can be considered under special circumstances.
