    We at the Finnish Environment Institute are seeking a Principal researcher in forest biodiversity for a permanent employment relationship.

    Your primary task will be to lead and develop research as well as projects and project entities that focus on forest biodiversity, and in particular on understanding the past and future biodiversity impacts of land use and climate change. You will also be responsible for preparing funding applications. The position includes demanding expert tasks related to assessing the state and trends of forest biodiversity and the biodiversity impacts of land use. The job description includes following the development of domestic and international research knowledge in the field, producing scientific publications, and presenting and communicating research results. The position involves participation in societal interaction and, in particular, in dialogue on forests in various communication channels and at events.

    The position is located in the Finnish Environment Institute’s Nature solutions unit, in the Use of ecosystem information group, where we research and produce data related to biodiversity, ecosystem activities and ecosystem services and develop and test new methods and models related to these. Syke has offices at Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä and Oulu - you can express your wish concerning the office location. We work in an open space office and activity-based environment, but flexible remote working in Finland is our working standard today.

    Our expectations of the applicant

    We expect the applicant to have a PhD in natural sciences, ecological competence, and expertise in the impacts of land use on forest biodiversity. In addition, we expect the applicant to have understanding of topical issues in Finnish nature and forest policy. Experience and demonstrated competence in obtaining research and development project funding and in research and project management are also essential.
    Experience in international projects and of work in expert working groups will be considered of benefit as will the ability to advance method development work related to the theme’s research.

    Personal characteristics we value include good interaction skills and motivation to participate in teamwork. The applicant will also need the ability and motivation to participate in societal discussion.

    The position will require good oral and written English skills. A command of Finnish and/or Swedish are useful in the position.
