This task is related to the government’s goal of hiring 500 young people for new fixed-term positions during 2026. The positions are intended for people aged 18–25 who are applying for their first job with the state.
We are looking for a trainee for spatial statistics research tasks at the Natural Resources Institute Finland’s Viikki office. This is a fixed-term position between 1.9.-30.11.2026. The employment can also start later, but not later than 1.10.2026. The duration of employment is 3 months.
Tasks include processing of large treemap datasets, working together with researchers to develop of new statistical indices, programming estimators for the indices, running numerical studies, and reporting scientific findings. The overall task is to develop new spatial statistics to describe local structure in large treemaps. The goal is to find interpretable summaries of large complex tree location datasets and to explore which summaries work well, and which not, as inputs in species distribution modelling. It is possible to work on Master’s thesis or equivalent as part of this employment.
We offer the trainee comprehensive orientation and guidance throughout the duration of the employment relationship.
The applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 25 and seeking their first state job, as this position is part of the government’s goal to hire 500 young people for new fixed-term positions in 2026.
We expect the applicant to have:
• interest in analysing large point pattern datasets, especially forestry-related
• motivation in developing statistical methodology specific applications
• excellent / good oral and written skills in English
• an active approach to work and ability to work both independently and in a team
• good programming skills in the software language R
We consider the following to be an advantage:
• studies e.g. in statistics, data science, machine learning or applied mathematics
• experience / knowhow of simulation experiments, statistical modelling and spatial data processing and analysis
