Luke is looking for a senior scientist to research and develop forest management chains, new measurement methods and models for growing trees and stands as well as predicting their development.

As a senior scientist specialising in forest growth and yield, you will analyse and interpret data to study and model forest regeneration, growth, stand structure and development. Research topics cover both rotation and continuous cover forestry. The work will also entail developing measurement methods and analysing data collected via remote sensing technologies, such as LiDAR, satellite imagery and drone-based photogrammetry. Key responsibilities include applying for national and international research funding, managing projects, reporting, scientific publishing, engaging with stakeholders and transferring research knowledge into practice.

The position requires a doctoral degree in a relevant field and experience studying forest management methods in the boreal zone. Experience with relevant research and measurement methodologies and scientific publishing is also required. The applicant must demonstrate a strong track record of successfully obtaining external research funding and implementing research projects.

We value strong expertise in forest regeneration and growth biology, forest stand development dynamics, as well as rotation and continuous cover forestry. Excellent written and spoken English skills are essential. We also appreciate good interpersonal and communication skills, as well as familiarity with both international and national stakeholders. A valid driver’s license and readiness for occasional travel and fieldwork are required.

Success in this role requires experience conducting forest growth and yield studies. Knowledge of different digital data collection tools, statistical approaches, machine learning and AI-based techniques, forest growth modelling and simulation systems, as well as an in-depth understanding of the operational environment of boreal forest management, are considered assets.
