We seek a postdoc with a PhD in forestry, machine learning, or statistics for the project “Digital Twin of Boreal Forest Structure with Remote Sensing and Forest Inventories”. We offer a possibility to do cutting-edge research in an international setting.

We seek to fill a postdoctoral position in project “Digital Twin of Boreal Forest Structure with Remote Sensing and Forest Inventories (DigiTForest)” funded by the Academy of Finland. The objective is to develop methods for large-scale tree-level mapping of forests with special focus on biodiversity using remote sensing data, e.g., especially airborne laser scanning. The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Dr. Joel Kostensalo and collaborates closely with Luke’s remote sensing experts and project collaborators from Sweden, Norway, and Canada. The work includes research visits to international collaborators. The position is situated by default in Joensuu, but in special cases Helsinki is another alternative.

We expect a doctoral degree in an applicable field (e.g., forestry, statistics, machine learning, data science, applied physics, or similar), good skills in statistical analysis of empirical data, capability to handle large data sets, fluent written and oral English, and a willingness to work abroad. In addition, we appreciate previous experience in working with remote sensing data, large-scale scientific computing, and familiarity with the R programming environment. We also take into account the quantity and quality of previous scientific publications, particularly those related to forestry, remote sensing, or machine learning.

The well-being of our people and a positive approach towards innovation and development are particularly important to us. Our mobile work model allows you to work in Finland in the location most appropriate for your work. In addition, we provide flexible hours, and as your employment with us continues, long vacations. We offer lunch benefits, as well as sports, culture, or commuting support.

The person selected for the position might need to undergo standard security clearance vetting with the applicant’s consent (Security Clearance Act 726/2014). More detailed information on the procedure and the subject's rights is available at www.supo.fi.
