The Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) and the University of Jyväskylä (JYU) are seeking a joint Research Professor in Circular Economy Markets.
This joint position (50/50%) is based in Jyväskylä and involves conducting in-depth research on the development of circular economy markets using advanced economics and business management methods. At Syke, the Research professor’s position is based in the Circular Economy Solutions Unit. At JYU, the Professor’s position will be hosted by the School of Business and Economics, JSBE.
At Syke, we support the building of sustainable society with research, information, and services, ambitiously seeking to make an impact on global sustainability transformation. JYU’s School of Business and Economics (JSBE) is an internationally recognized business school committed to high-quality teaching and research, fostering multidisciplinary cooperation and continuous improvement. The task of the Research Professor focuses on generating new, research-based knowledge to drive systemic change towards a circular economy, addressing global sustainability challenges through innovative solutions and collaborative teamwork.
Circular economy (CE) is an economic system that can replace linear economy and transform production and consumption patterns within planetary boundaries. Moving towards CE can mitigate climate change and protect nature by limiting the use of virgin natural resources.
Despite the fact that the EU has emphasized the importance of CE for over a decade, the current economic system in the EU is mainly relying on a linear economy. In Finland, the situation is parallel to the EU.
The transformation of linear economy to circular is a large-scale systemic challenge. To enhance the development of circular economy markets requires comprehensive understanding and development strategy, based on a sound research-based knowledge foundation. Relevant research topics toward this end include:
• Understanding needs and scope as well as the magnitude of CE with respect to global sustainability challenges
• Analyses of material flows and value added as well as their distribution nationally and internationally
• Dynamics and economics of the development of CE markets
• CE steering instruments and targeting
• Consumers’ preferences on and willingness to pay for CE products and services
The task of the Research professor is to analyze the development of CE markets with economics and/or business management research methods. Essential objectives are to (a) explore how different observations and research results concerning CE can be generalized at the level of national economy, and (b) estimate the potential economic impacts of CE under different scenarios and modeling assumptions, in comparison with environmental implications.
