Luke is looking for a Research Scientist, postdoc, tree breeding, for a 3-year position. The task is related to forest tree breeding (https://www.luke.fi/fi/luonnonvaratieto/tiedetta-ja-tietoa/metsanjalostus) and research supporting it.
This postdoc position is part of the Postdoctoral Programme for Research Institutes in Finland. The programme is funded from the Finnish government's multi-annual research and development (R&D) funding plan. The programme recruits 85 new postdoctoral researchers to 12 Finnish government research institutes between 2025 and 2028. The aim of the Programme is to strengthen RDI competence in areas important to society and business. A postdoctoral researcher will conduct goal-oriented high-level research at the interface between the academic community, industry, and administration. The Programme supports postdoctoral researcher’s networking and mobility between sectors.
The selected person will also take part in Luke's Doctoral Programme, which coordinates, develops, and monitors the qualification of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at the Natural Resources Institute Finland.
The main duty and key responsibility of the Researcher Scientist, postdoc, tree breeding, is to perform quantitative-genetics focused research and method development that will enhance the effectiveness of Finnish tree breeding. The main research themes are related to the development of breeding methods, including the utility of new phenotyping and genotyping techniques for operational breeding. The research will be carried out in collaboration with the tree breeding program and national and international research consortiums working on related topics, taking into account the researcher’s expertise and interests.
The nature of the task requires an ability to communicate on research both in a scientific context as well as for various stakeholders.
In this task, you can prove your expertise in quantitative genetics and statistics for tree breeding data and in the integration of novel methods into tree breeding.

To be successful in this role, you will be expected to have a good knowledge of quantitative genetics / breeding, and to know about on-going development of phenotyping and genotyping techniques, and to have open-minded and applied approach to research.
As an applicant, you have
• recently completed a doctorate (max 5 years ago) in one of the following fields: tree breeding, plant breeding, animal breeding, quantitative genetics, or a related field
• demonstrated ability to publish in high quality peer-reviewed publications.
• strong skills in quantitative genetics and statistical methods, including software relevant to breeding (e.g., R, ASReml, SAS)
• understanding of / interest in novel phenotyping and genotyping techniques and their development
• excellent written and oral English (Additionally, written and oral Finnish is seen as a strength)
• ability and willingness to work collaboratively
• ability and willingness to work independently and learn new skills
We will also consider it an advantage if you have knowledge of boreal tree species and forestry, or experience in operational breeding of trees, crops or animals. Further, we also appreciate if you are able to show acquisition of external funding, experience in project management and / or existing research or stakeholder networks.
