We are looking for an innovative and open-minded applied statistician who is interested in solving interesting research problems arising in the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke).

The person works as a researcher at the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), specialising in applied statistics (title: research scientist, statistics). The position involves participation in the planning and implementation of research projects at Luke as an expert in statistical methods. The role will involve working on research projects in the field of plant research, which require strong interdisciplinary expertise in the fields of statistics, mathematics, geoinformatics and computer science, in particular the integration and analysis of data from different sources to produce novel research-based solutions for different stakeholders. The role requires continuous participation in scientific publishing in international publications. The person will also contribute, as appropriate, to the production of method services in Luke: as an instructor in statistical methods and statistical software courses, and by providing statistical consultation and software support.

The position based at Luke's Jokioinen office, but another location is possible in special circumstances.

Our expectations of the applicant

Success in this position is primarily based on an analytical, mathematical-logical and solution-oriented approach. The position requires master's degree in Statistics and supporting studies in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Geographical Methods and/or Computer Science. In addition, the position requires a strong knowledge of statistical analysis and modelling of empirical data and experience in the use of SAS software or the ability to start using SAS software. Knowledge of other statistical and spatial software (e.g. R, SPSS, ArcGIS) would be an advantage. Good collaboration and teamwork skills, innovative problem solving and good written and oral English and Finnish language skills are desirable. Previous experience working in research projects is considered an advantage, as well as basic knowledge of the application areas of the Natural Resources Institute Finland (e.g. crop production).

A PhD in statistics or a related field would be an advantage. Experience in teaching/training would also be an advantage. As regards methodological skills, knowledge of methods (e.g. linear mixed models and generalized linear mixed models) used in experimental and register-based studies, and knowledge and experience in research design would be an advantage. Applicants will also be assessed based on the quality and magnitude of their previous publication record.

  • Description of the remote work: Mobile work is used at Luke. This means that work is performed where it suits best. Mobile work is only possible within Finland, and the practices of mobile work are agreed with the supervisor. We also meet regularly face-to-face.

  • Working time format: Office working hours
  • Trial period: A trial period is 6 months.
  • Remuneration information: The position is at complexity level 8 in Luke's salary system and the position-specific salary is EUR 3 512,13 per month. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid (max. 50% of the position-specific salary). A new employee's personal performance component depends on competence and experience and generally falls in the range of 15-20 %. The applicant may also present a separate salary request.
