At Luke, we are looking for a Research Professor to lead and conduct research on the economics of adaptation and resilience to environmental and geopolitical shocks, with a focus on effective policy design through advanced economic modeling.
Global environmental and economic changes require industries to adapt to new conditions. As geopolitical conflicts and extreme weather events disrupt global trade flows, assessing the role of governments in stabilising the economic system and recovering from the shocks raises its importance. In the core of the tenure is the form and magnitude of government interventions in anticipation of uncertain future. The second defining concept is resilience. With resilient systems less anticipatory emphasis is needed, while systems lacking resilience need to be steered cautiously. Irreversible or nearly irreversible changes, and not only in environmental systems and land use, but also in terms of market or institutional structures, need to be anticipated and accounted for in optimal policy design.
The research field covers economics, focusing on the environmental issues and policies, from the perspective of adaptation to climate change and geopolitically originated shocks. Focus is on formulating decision making problems under uncertainty, making most from weak data & signals, and applying stochastic methods in decision-making analysis. Combining economics of adaptation, resilient system design and understanding of global trade and change is expected to offer new insights in designing effective, welfare maximising policies at the national, EU and global levels. Particularly, the research should cover coherence of policies for renewable resources and land use, and the trade-offs between the societal objectives related to them.

The research professor’s (tenure track: associate or research professor) tasks are to conduct, direct and promote research, be active and visible in regional, national and international research collaboration and industrial networks, acquire broad-based international external funding for research, co-operate with stakeholders, publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and disseminate research results, besides the research community, to relevant policymakers, business actors and the larger public. In addition, the research professor is expected to be active in developing collaboration on adaptation and resilience issues across the different scientific disciplines both inside and outside Luke.
The research professor should have a doctoral degree in economics. Extra merit is awarded for resource and/or environmental economic focus within economics. The research professor should have a profound understanding of analytical economics and related methodology. Numerical modelling skills are a prerequisite including, for example applications in stochastic modelling or other established approaches in economics under uncertainty. Readiness or experience in machine learning and other AI methods is a benefit. In addition, the research professor would considerably benefit from being familiar with the underpinnings of the bio-based economy, as well as its core policies and stakeholders.
