We are recruiting a Research professor for a fixed-term position from November 1, 2025, to October 31, 2029. The research field of the professor is forest biodiversity.
Your task as Research professor will be to develop internationally competitive research field and expertise, in a fashion that aligns with the strategy of the Finnish Environment Institute Syke. We expect you to make a significant contribution to international research in the field, securing funding, and publishing. We also expect societal impact via increasing general understanding of the ecological impacts of forest use practices and the importance of biodiversity. You will lead national and international projects, guide project teams, and develop organization's expertise, and national and international networks. You will work with multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary groups, crossing organizational unit boundaries.
The position is located in the Use of Ecosystem Information group of the Nature Solutions unit. The group produces information on biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and ecosystem services, and tests and develops new methods and models to assess the state of ecosystems and, for example, the impact of climate change on species occurrence and ecosystem services.
Syke maintains offices in Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, and Oulu, providing flexibility for the location of this role. You can express your wish concerning the office location. We work in an open space office and activity-based environment, but flexible remote working is our working standard today.

We expect a suitable doctoral degree and extensive experience in researching and assessing the state and trends of forest nature, the biodiversity impacts of different forest use practices, and producing knowledge-based solutions to strengthen forest biodiversity. Knowledge of current issues and networks in Finnish, EU, and international nature and forest policy is a strong advantage for the position. You will need the ability and motivation to participate in societal discussions. Working at Syke and within Syke's networks involves interdisciplinary and multilingual teamwork, so as a research professor, you will need excellent collaboration, interaction, and communication skills, as well as excellent proficiency in English.
The selection criteria for Syke's research professor applicants include:
• Scientific publication activity relative to the international level of the research field
• Securing research funding as a leader of projects or sub-projects
• Leading research projects and developing and guiding the expertise of project teams
• International research networks and stakeholder collaboration, as well as other advocacy work
• Systematic development of research in the field supporting Syke's strategy
