
Research Professor/Associate Research Professor (Applied Geology, Sustainable Energy Transition)
The Geological Survey of Finland is seeking a research professor or associate research professor in applied geology, specialising in research related to energy systems and the sustainable energy transition. The position is located in the Energy and Construction Solutions unit. Your office will be in Espoo, Kokkola, Kuopio or Rovaniemi, and you can also work flexibly in Finland over a remote connection.
Your task will be to innovate, coordinate and lead research in applied geology supporting GTK’s Energy Transition focus area. Your research will focus on energy production, storage and transfer solutions. The job description includes research on deep-seated bedrock structures and rocks, the geochemistry and movement of bedrock groundwater, as well as modelling. Additionally, your tasks will include producing geological solutions related to the hydrogen economy, geoenergy and nuclear energy for the needs of a clean industrial transition.
Considering the stage of your career, you have good capabilities to apply for competitive research funding, prepare both Finnish and international science and innovation projects and also take responsibility for their implementation and management. You will also be responsible for directing and supporting the development of applied geology competence related to energy systems and participating in the development of customer-oriented applications. You are able to seek new research perspectives and to inspire others to identify and solve current research challenges in the global operating field.

Applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in geology or a similar field of natural sciences or technology suitable for the area of responsibility and a good understanding of the area.
Education, experience and skills expected of the applicant
• Internationally recognised expertise in applied geology related to energy systems.
• High-quality academic research conducted in the field, evidenced by publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and/or books.
• Proven ability to identify and solve new geoscientific research questions that are important for society.
• Experience in geological research applied to energy systems, the energy transition, energy production and/or storage.
• Solid experience in acquiring competitive external project/research funding.
• Strong motivation for research and developing competence and research methods.
• Experience in scientific management and a mentoring approach to work.
• Established international research networks.
• Excellent oral and written English skills.
• Excellent interaction, networking and teamwork skills.
Education, experience and skills that are appreciated
• Experience of utilising geological expertise in the development of practical customer solutions.
• Experience in the use of geophysical methods in applied geology research related to energy systems and the energy transition.
