Postdoctoral Researcher (marine multichannel seismics)
The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher for marine multichannel seismic surveys. You will work in the Marine Geology team of the Environmental Solutions unit with 60 professionals. Your office will be in Espoo in the Helsinki capital area. You can also work remotely flexibly in Finland.
GTK is acquiring a new high-resolution multichannel seismic system for our coastal research vessel Geomari, which you will use for scientific research and be responsible for developing data processing and interpretation for scientific and commercial projects. The science project will study the internal structure of glacial landforms and (paleo)geomorphology of buried till beds in Finnish sea areas to gain important new insight in the past glacial dynamics. Your task will be to present the project results in international conferences and scientific publications. Your task will also be to supervise a PhD student and acquire funding for future research projects.
This postdoc position is part of Postdoctoral Programme for Research Institutes in Finland. The Programme is funded from the Finnish long-term research and development (R&D) plan. The Programme recruits 85 new postdoctoral researchers to 12 Finnish government research institutes between 2025 and 2028. The aim of the Programme is to strengthen R&D competence in areas important to society and business. Postdoctoral researchers will drive impactful, high-level research bridging science, industry, and administration. Education, experience and skills expected of an applicant
• PhD in geophysics or related field. Your doctorate is no more than five years old (up to ten years for special
reasons). A person who has been awarded a permission to defend their dissertation before submitting the
application may also be considered.
• Experience in multichannel seismic data processing and interpretation
• Sound programming skills (e.g., C/C++, Git, Python)
• Knowledge on glacial geomorphology
• Ability and willingness to participate in research cruises on the Baltic Sea
• English language proficiency, both oral and written
• Demonstrated ability to write scientific publications
Education, experience and skills that are appreciated
• Experience in working on research vessels
• Strong international networks and networking skills
• Experience in international work settings
• Interest in learning Finnish language
