We are seeking talented postdoctoral researchers for the National Land Survey's Geospatial Research Institute in a three-year fixed-term position from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2028.
The Department of Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry are looking for a poctdoctoral researcher to develop and utilize multi-modal point cloud processing methodology in multidisciplinary research applications. The selected applicant will take part in managing and further developing point cloud processing frameworks related to the Scan4Est Research Infrastructure and the UNITE Flagship and contributing towards their scientific publications and impact. A successful candidate will have a wide experience in working with different point cloud and photogrammetric platforms, their data, and processing techniques and analysis. This requires strong programming and scripting skills. We also value skills in knowledge transfer and clear communication in the form of open publishing of methods and data.
This postdoctoral position is part of the Finnish state research institutes' postdoctoral program, funded by Finland’s long-term research and development plan. The program will recruit 85 new postdoctoral researchers across 12 Finnish government research institutes from 2025 to 2028. Its aim is to strengthen R&D competence in fields important to society and business. Postdoctoral researchers will conduct impactful, high-level research that combines science, industry, and government. The program also supports networking and mobility across sectors. A doctoral degree in geomatics, physics, surveying, automation technology, robotics, or a relevant field is required. The degree must have been completed within the last five years (or within ten years in special circumstances). Candidates who have been granted permission for their doctoral defense by the application deadline are also eligible. The role is open to both early-career and experienced researchers, including those already working within the research institute. The selected candidate’s experience will influence salary determination.

• Demonstrated skills in developing laser scanning and/or photogrammetric sensor platforms and/or managing data collected with them
• Demonstrated skills in developing and managing processing pipelines for multi-modal point cloud and/or photogrammetric data with own and/or commercial software
• Strong experience with one or more of the following programming languages: C, C++, Python, MATLAB, Rust, Julia
• Strong publication record on developing point cloud and/or photogrammetric processing methods and their applications.
We also hope the candidate meets the following qualifications:
• Experience with point cloud processing in High Performance Computing platforms
• Experience in publishing open data and methods related to point cloud processing
• Experience with communicating own research with non-specialists and in multidisciplinary collaboration
• Active participation in international collaboration
• Experience in teaching and supervising students on point cloud processing and/or photogrammetry
• Experience with other open and commercial scientific software, especially on GIS, R, databases, and in signal processing
• Familiarity with dense and multitemporal point cloud time series
