We are seeking talented postdoctoral researchers for the National Land Survey's Finnish Geospatial Research Institute in a three-year fixed-term position from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2028.
Geoportti RI (Open Geospatial Information Infrastructure for Research) is the nationally leading research infrastructure being an indispensable geocomputing service provider. Geoportti RI empowers reproducible scientific research through the integration of massive geospatial data, advanced tools, and methodologies within HPC and cloud computing environments. Our profound scientific and societal impact extends over disciplinary boundaries by providing significant added value by complementing CSC’s hardware infrastructure, enriching and promoting open access to and easy use of research institutions’ geospatial data resources, and augmenting educational offerings in universities. As part of improving our service provision, the postdoc’s duty is to conduct research and development of AI-based methods to improve the findability and interoperability of geospatial data sets.
This postdoctoral position is part of the Finnish state research institutes' postdoctoral program, funded by Finland’s long-term research and development plan. The program will recruit 85 new postdoctoral researchers across 12 Finnish government research institutes from 2025 to 2028. Its aim is to strengthen R&D competence in fields important to society and business. Postdoctoral researchers will conduct impactful, high-level research that combines science, industry, and government. The program also supports networking and mobility across sectors. A doctoral degree in geoinformatics, computer science or other relevant field of science is required. The degree must have been completed within the last five years (or within ten years in special circumstances). Candidates who have been granted permission for their doctoral defense by the application deadline are also eligible. The role is open to both early-career and experienced researchers, including those already working within the research institute. The selected candidate’s experience will influence salary determination.
To succeed in this position, we hope you are highly motivated, self-directed, creative, and innovative. The role involves extensive collaboration with other researchers and external partners, so strong interaction, collaboration, and communication skills are essential. Key qualities include the ability to conduct independent research and work actively with others, publish and clearly present research findings, and secure future research funding.
From the postdoc candidate we expect:
• Proficiency in deep learning architectures. Familiarity with recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is also helpful.
• Knowledge on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and use of Large Language Models (LLMs)
• Strong programming experience (e.g., C/C++, Git, Python)
• Demonstrated ability to write scientific publications.
Preferred qualifications:
• Understanding on how to process, analyse and visualise geospatial data efficiently
• Experience on geospatial data management and databases
• Familiarity with geospatial data and metadata standards (e.g., ISO 19115, OGC standards)
• Familiarity with geospatial web application development is also beneficial.
