The Ombudsman for Older People is an independent and autonomous authority. The Ombudsman for Older People is responsible for promoting and assessing the implementation of the fundamental and human rights of older people in legislation and social decision making.

The Ombudsman for Older People works in cooperation with various authorities, organisations and other actors in society to promote the interests and rights of older people. The Ombudsman for Older People is an advocacy body.

The office of the Ombudsman for Older People is staffed by five people.
