Office of the Bankruptcy Ombudsman

The Bankruptcy Ombudsman is an independent specialist authority charged with supervising the administration of bankruptcy estates in Finland. The Office was founded in 1995. The Office employs 10 people. Most of the employees are Senior Bankruptcy Officers and have a postgraduate degree, usually in law.

The Office of the Bankruptcy Ombudsman is responsible for supervising that bankruptcy estates are administered in a lawful and proper manner and for promoting and developing the proper administration of bankruptcy estates by making initiatives, giving advice and issuing guidelines. The Office of the Bankruptcy Ombudsman also sees to the public receivership of bankruptcy estates. In addition, the Office of the Bankruptcy Ombudsman monitors the direction of proceedings relating to the restructuring of businesses and supervises that the restructuring administrators appropriately fulfil the duties entrusted to them.

One of the objectives of the work of the Office of the Bankruptcy Ombudsman is to prevent financial crime associated with bankruptcies.

The Office of the Bankruptcy Ombudsman uses its network of international partners to promote cooperation and the sharing of information between bankruptcy supervision authorities in different countries.
