The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) is a state-owned expert and research institute that affects the lives of all of us. In line with our vision, we are working to ensure that we can all have good welfare.

We proudly defend welfare and health, whether it is popular or not. We reduce inequalities and develop a safe and crisis-resilient welfare society where everyone can take care of their own health and the health of their loved ones. We promote the health of both people and the environment, as they are inseparably linked to each other.

Nutrition recommendations, multiculturalism, national diseases, intoxicants, infectious diseases, ageing, pandemics, vaccination coverage of the population, mental health problems, addictions, work against violence, doping testing, development of child welfare, cause of death investigations and paternity tests. These and countless other topics are part of our work.

We have achieved a lot: we have built one of the world’s most extensive vaccination programmes for children and young people, significantly reduced daily smoking and succeeded in considerably bringing down cardiovascular disease rates.
However, we are currently facing new challenges such as the ageing of the population, growing inequalities, mental health problems, climate change and an intensified security situation. We respond to these changes that have a direct impact on health and welfare through proactive research that helps decision-makers make wise decisions.

We work in multiple locations around Finland. Our headquarters are in Helsinki, and we also have operations in Kuopio, Oulu, Tampere and Turku.

THL employs over 1,200 specialists, most of whom are professionals in medicine, health science and social sciences. We also have specialists in statistical, life sciences and environmental sciences. Our multidisciplinary work community includes project planning officers, doctors, researchers, nurses, development managers, laboratory researchers, vaccine coordinators, forensic chemists, senior specialists, lawyers, and communication and finance experts.

Although we come from different sectors, we all share a passion to influence people’s health and welfare. The fact that our work matters inspires and motivates us and many choose to work here precisely because of the impact of our work.
