Luke is hiring a Research Scientist in a role of postdoctoral researcher for a two-year project focused on developing remote sensing tools to map biodiversity and ecosystem services in peatlands.
The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral research scientist focus on the remote sensing of peatlands. He/she will work on 'REACTION' project. The project 'REACTION' (Navigating the Risks of Hydroclimatic Extremes for Freshwater Ecosystem Services in Forest Landscapes) is funded by the European Partnership Water4All and involves collaboration with partners from Sweden, Spain, Slovakia, and Austria.
The postdoctoral researcher will focus on developing and mapping peatland biodiversity and ecosystem services indicators using multi-stream remote sensing data. He/she will be involved in mapping relevant indicators and computing a composite index to identify exposure and hotspot areas for biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Key tasks involve processing and analyzing diverse data sources, including satellite imagery, LiDAR, drone imagery, iPad-mounted LiDAR sensors data and field inventory data. Responsibilities may also include conducting drone flights, performing fieldwork, and carrying out other supporting tasks. Additionally, the role involves project management, reporting, and contributing to research funding applications. Tasks can be tailored to align with the researcher’s skills and interests.
The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Dr. Parvez Rana and will work closely with Luke’s remote sensing experts, as well as project collaborators from EU countries. International collaboration is essential, as the Ecosystem and Modeling group (ESMA) is engaged in multiple EU Horizon projects and maintains strong connections within the European peatland research community.

To succeed in this role, you should have expertise in managing large spatial datasets related to peatlands modelling; knowledge of remote sensing data and tools; and strong skills in statistical modelling methods.
We expect an applicant to have a recently completed Ph.D. (max 5 years ago) in a relevant field (e.g., physical geography, environmental science, statistics, machine learning, or a related area).
In addition, the applicant must have a strong background in remote sensing, with proficient computer and software skills (e.g., R, Python, ArcGIS) and skills in applying statistical methods and handling large datasets. We appreciate an interest in understanding peatland biodiversity and ecosystem services. The position requires fluent English (both oral and written).
The selection process considers the quantity and quality of publications in relevant scientific journals. In addition, the applicant must name at least two (2) referees.
The person selected for the position might need to undergo standard security clearance vetting with the applicant’s consent (Security Clearance Act 726/2014). More detailed information on the procedure and the subject's rights is available at www.supo.fi.
