Luke is seeking a postdoc for a three-year position. The task involves combining crop simulation models with artificial intelligence. The work builds on Luke’s previous research and is carried out in an international research environment.

The researcher (Postdoc) will work on developing Agricultural climate intelligence stack for forecasting crop growth under future climate conditions. The selected candidate will implement high-performance hybrid crop growth models that contain mechanistic and neural network components. These models will build on previous research and existing modeling software, and will support agricultural decision-making and preparedness for climate risks.

The position offers an excellent opportunity to develop a research profile in crop modeling, within a strong international network.

The work is part of a Horizon Europe project, in which the researcher will collaborate with other research groups across Europe. The role includes writing scientific publications, contributing to project reporting, and participation in the coordination of the project tasks. It also involves engaging with the stakeholders, including industry partners and farmers, evaluating the applicability and impact of the developed solutions.

The selected candidate will also take part in the Luke Doctoral and Postdoctoral Programme, which coordinates, develops, and monitors the professional development of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at the Natural Resources Institute Finland.

· A recently completed doctoral degree (typically within the past 5 years) in a relevant field
· Demonstrated ability to publish in high-quality scientific journals
· Competence in crop model development using either process-based or machine learning methods
· Strong programming skills in at least one numerical programming language such as Python, R, Julia, C++ or Matlab
· Proven ability to carry out project management tasks
· Excellent written and spoken English skills
· Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work independently

Skills in deep neural networks, high performance computing and processing of geospatial data are seen as an advantage
