Deadline for applications 2.11.2026 at 23:59
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year position in Helsinki, Finland, to develop novel methods for monitoring atmospheric gases using a lightweight hyperspectral camera as part of the TomoHQ project, funded by Business Finland.
You will support the technological development of a lightweight hyperspectral camera and develop advanced retrieval and inversion methods for detecting and quantifying atmospheric gases. The work combines atmospheric radiative transfer modelling, algorithm development, and the interpretation and validation of hyperspectral measurements. The resulting methods will support applications ranging from rapid environmental assessment and incident response to regulatory monitoring, including maritime emission surveillance. The research will be closely linked to international projects within our unit and will complement the exploitation and validation of observations from new and upcoming satellite instruments.
In the TomoHQ project you will collaborate with experts from the Remote Sensing Research Unit at FMI and the TomoHQ consortium. The position involves also publishing scientific articles and presenting research findings at national and international conferences, workshops, and seminars.
You will work the Atmospheric Remote Sensing group, a team of 18
researchers. The group is part of the Earth Observation Unit, which consists of approximately 40 experts and researchers. The unit conducts research in Earth observation, with a particular focus on atmospheric composition, air quality and greenhouse gases, the Earth’s surface, and the cryosphere. Our research combines satellite observations with ground-based and other complementary measurements.
• A doctoral degree in a relevant field such as atmospheric sciences, remote sensing, physics, mathematics, data science or other related disciplines. The position is suitable for early-career researcher. We can also consider applicants who have nearly finalised their PhD (e.g., candidates who have been granted permission to defend their thesis before the application deadline are also eligible).
• Expertise in atmospheric radiative transfer across the optical spectral rang
• Experience on inverse problem methods
• Good programming skills and experience with computational methods (e.g., Python, Matlab)
• Experience in scientific publishing and participating in international research collaboration
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to work independently
• Proficiency in written and spoken English
